It’s a MeatFest at Tri-Tip Grill

“Is it BBQ, or is it just some weird California foodie thing?”

We heard the question and had to get the answers. Enquiring minds needed to know.

The answer: It’s darn good BBQ. And hamburgers. And salads. All from a true scratch kitchen that is another outstanding addition to The Star at Frisco’s rapidly expanding roster of restaurants.

Tri-Tip is located right across from the mini football field outside of the Ford Center complex, at 6775 Cowboys Way, #1305. It boasts the only pass-through bar and patio combo in the facility, so far. And while the beverages may be outstanding (Yup, they are!), it’s the delicious cuts of Certified Angus that stand out. Unless you like juicy burgers, fall off the bone ribs, or other equally mouthwatering offerings.

Our regular dining group has visited the restaurant three times already, and each time was a new experience. We recommend the Char-Roasted tri-tip. It’s thick and flavorful, served with the standard menu sides of red mashers and gravy, cornbread and a heapin’ helpin’ of roasted veggies. Diners can also ask to substitute any of the other side items on the menu.

The Black Pepper Baby Back Rib dish is a thing of beauty, too. Our group shared a full rack of these little babies, and we were impressed by the perfect blend of rub and smoke. There are also three bottled sauces to help along the flavor explosion: a Sweet & Smokey, the Texas favorite Hot & Spicy, and the mustard based and Carolina-inspired mixture. They’re all good, although we all agreed that we would prefer more heat from the spicy sauce.

The Yik Yak salad is a leafy concoction of crispy pasta, snow peas, cilantro, green onions, celery, toasted almonds & sesame dressing, served in a soft tortilla. Our pal chose to leave the tortilla on the side to cut back on carbs. Very healthy. She also asked for chicken to pump up the protein. It was late in the evening on this particular visit, and the consensus was that the bird was a bit dry, but flavorful anyway.

On a subsequent visit, we had a cadre of teens who blasted through all six of the burgers on the menu. They must have enjoyed them because we didn’t hear even a word about homework woes, video games, or the Kardashians.

Tri-Tip Grill is a franchise store, but it has its act together on service as well as food.

Try it. We’ll bet our last serving of tasty onion straws that you’ll like it, too. Open til 10 PM on Sunday – Thursday and until 11 PM on Friday and Saturday.
