Mi Cocina Shines at The Star

posted in: Real People Review | 0

If it seems that our team of fearless FriscoFoodies have visited The Star at Frisco a lot lately, it’s because we have. Without question, it is the newest and hottest spot to seek out culinary experiences of all types.

Many of the restaurant concepts at Jerry Jones’ Frisco development are new to the area, but one giant staple stands out on the traffic circle that is home to the giant “Huddle” sculpture: Mi Cocina.

If you’re an area foodie and you don’t know Mi Cocina, you either don’t enjoy Tex-Mex or you’ve been marooned on a desert island and just returned home. This venerable DFW concept is so ubiquitous that you can eat in at least three of them within a ten minute drive of the location we visited. This store is airy, with high ceilings that do not leave the dining room as noisy as some of the other Mi Cocina locations we’ve visited.

The Star location boasts two solid outdoor patios, although one is larger than the other and heated. The interiors are beautifully designed with a stand-alone fireplace, stone, and a more upscale atmosphere than the Shops at Legacy store down the DNT.

This is an affordable family venue with a cosmopolitan, after work twist. The menu features and array of pretty standard Tex-Mex fare, but it is all prepared well, and there is a lot of it. Prices are low to moderate. Value proposition is high.

Our favorites?

Start with the Jalapeño-Agave Margarita. Man up, ladies. You can handle it. Then move on to the queso dip. There are a couple from which to choose. You pick your fave. They’re both above average.

You can’t go wrong with the Sirloin Fajitas, a sizzling presentation of the traditional dish, complemented by potato wedges that added a savory flavor we liked.

The Tacos de Camaron were surprisingly flavorful, reinforcing our opinion that the shrimp were fresh, not frozen. The tacos are served with a small avocado salad of sorts, sprinkled with tortilla strips, and cilantro rice. This is a meal that really satisfies, but looks like something that our athletic guest could order with her friends after tennis.

Finally, we’re big fans of the enchiladas. You can choose your favorites, but we are particularly enamored with the traditional cheese and onion, covered in chili con carne, and the chicken covered in sour cream poblano gravy. Delish! Scour the menu carefully for the combo of four enchiladas, a taco, and rice, all for under $15.

If you have room for dessert, but you probably won’t, we’re sure they’re all sweet and easy on the palette, but we’ve never been able to go the distance. Maybe next time.
